Second Draft Of My Music Magazine

This is my second draft. I have improved this by putting text down the side of the front cover. The colour of the text links with the pictures and allows the reader to know the text is about the person in the picture, as it is colour linked.
The improvements I will make to this draft, is too make the barcode smaller, as it looks rather dominant on the cover. I am also going to put different features onto the cover so it looks more attractive and eye catching, such as images that link with the theme 'electro' such as boomboxes etc. Later on in producing my final front cover, I will make the masthead more attractive so that it looks better on the cover and also becomes more eyecatching.

First Draft Of My Music Magazine

This is my first draft of my music magazine. The masthead stands out very clearly on the cover. The masthead is the same colour as his headphones which makes it eye catching. The medium shot used is centural on the page which makes him stand out. His eyes draw attention to the reader. The headline abouve the massthead is the same colour as the top he is wearing, which shows there may be a link with him to the text.

I will need to improve the text on the front cover. I will do this by adding more text on the page by putting slogans and splashes on the cover along with some information on what the magaizne entails.

Photos for my magazine

Out of all the photos I have taken for my magazine these are a few to show what I will be using on my front cover, double page spread and my contents page. I have made sure they link with the genre of electro. I have done this by choosing clothing which matches the style of electronic music. The tops have designs on such as bright colours, which link with the upbeat tempo of the genre electro. Also there are designs on the tops such as keyboards etc which also go well with the genre. These photos will also appeal to the target audience.

masthead titles and fonts

The feedback I got from my masthead titles and fonts were that Melody and Dynamic were the chosen mastheads and the favourite font was arista.
I will do a mock up magazine using the feedback I got and see if it actually suits the genre of my magazine.
The masthead is one of the most important things to consider on a front cover. This is because when the target audience are buying the magaizne, they will look for the masthead in a specific place to notice the magazine. The masthead has to be clear to raed and stand out most on the front cover.

The masthead used on this front cover is bold and it most dedinately stands out on the page. However, the fact that it is yellow and so is one section of the headings on the page makes it less eye catching, as the reader is drawn to both pieces of writing, when it should be the masthead which catches your attention the most. Because the masthead is the only piece of writing at the top of the page - this makes it dominant on the page.

Q magazine stands out very well on the page. The fact that the white Q is backed by a red backing colour is very effective. It is the main focus of the front cover, as a masthead should be. When progressing in my music magazine, I will bakc the masthead with a colour behind it so its looks more bold and outstanding on the page. Because the masthead is in a box, it seperates it to the rest of the information on the front cover.

With Vibe magazine, they always change the colour of the masthead, but they always keep it in the same place and also keep is bold. This is easy for the target audince to notice. Because it is placed at the top of the page makes it more noticable because thats when you look on a magazine and it overlaps the picture which also captures the readers attention.

After researching and analysing these mastheads,  have decided that I am going to put a colour behind the masthead so its stands out on the page and its eye catching.

Cover shots

For my music magazine, I would like to use either a long shot or a medium close up as the photograph on the front cover. If I was to do a long shot, this would allow me to be more creative and relate to my theme of 'electro' a little more than if I was to do a shot of a close up. However, using a medium close up tends to attract the readers attention more because the photograph is bigger and more noticable.

For example, this magazine has a medium close up as its cover shot which makes it appealing as he is the main focus of the front cover. This medium close up shows his facial expression well as well as his body language. He looks chilled out and relaxed yet still looks quite cool.

This cover shot is a medium long shot. You cant see his whole body head to toe but from the waist upwards. This allows text to be written around the photo easier than if it was a close up as the text would overlap their face and maybe be hard to see the text. However, I dont think a medium long shot is as effective as a medium close up.

The shot used on this magazine is a long shot. This allows the reader to see their whole body which enables them to see the figure of their body. This is good for a front cover because it is then easy to place the text around the shape of the persons body on the photo. However, like a medium long shot I do not think it has the same effect of a medium close up or a close up.

The shot used on the magaizne is a close up. This close up shot tightly frames this person used to display detail. Close up's are used to show emotion or feelings of a person as the main focus is their face, so facial expression are important. This close up also suggests the person in the photo is important to the magazine.

After researcing cover shots for magaiznes, I will defenetly choose to use a medium close up as the shot on my magazine cover. For the genre of my magazine and its purposes, I think a medium close up will be most effective.

planning - colour, font and photo ideas

Colour Scheme:

I think that all of the colour scheme abouve work well together. The first line of colours are effective, they are not bright and in your face but not to dull either. I think tat it is appealing that there are a mix of colours light and dark. It fits in well with the target audience - boys and girls as there isnt just boyish colours being used but also more feminine. If i was to used any of those colours as the background colour for a page, the other colours for text would still be able to be seen clearly. I think that those four colours would work perfectly throughout my magazine, as it definately refelcts the genre of electro.
The second line of colour is not as colourful as the first, but still works well with the genre of electro. However, I don't think the white will work very well with green. Furtheremore, the colours dont appeal to both male and female, more so male.
The third rown of colour is quite suttle and chilled, which doesnt really match well with electronic music. Electro music is upbeat and energetic and this doesn't show through this colour scheme. However, the colours work well together and text would be clear on a background of any of those colours.
Lastly, the colours used on the fourth row are dark and also more chilled colours. I think that this colour scheme would work better with a R+B magazine such as Vibe. Saying this, I think the light blue would look effective on my electro music magazine.
After analysing this colour chart, I have decided to used bright and darker colours to appeal to both male and female, and this wil lalso link with my genre of electronic music.

Titles for masthead:

Dynamic - Interlude - Bass - Beat - Tempo - Rhythem - Encore - Harmony - Melody - Note - Major

All these masthead titles are inspiration I have used are all music related definitions.

The masthead I have chosen to use for my 'electronic' genre music magazine is TEMPO.
I have decided to use this because it goes well with the theme of electronic and as electro music is an upbeat tempo sound, it links well with it and represents it.

Fonts for masthead:

I think that this font would work well as a masthead. This is because it suits the genre of electro well. It is bold, therefore, easy for the target audince to recognise. The masthead is the most important text on the front cover, and also throughout the rest of the magazine, such as the contents page.

I have chosen this font because its unusual
yet very clear and readable. I think this would be a good masthead but I dont think I will chose to use it as my masthead. I would use this font for subheadings and other information prehaps on the contents page and double page spread. I don't think this font would be to appropriate as the masthead as it's not as bold and chunky as a masthead should be.

This font is different and matches electro genre well. The dots over the 'i' stand out which makes the reader automaticaly look at the masthead.

This font is quite unique and would be great to use for my magazine. However, the 'd' and the 'o' look alike which makes it harder to make out what the text says. I like the boldness of it and how the lettering is square and jagged.

This design is simple which makes it easy for the reader to read. However, I think it looks to child like for the genre of my magazine and also, using this font throughout my magazined would become rather boring to look at and would'nt engage the reader.

Photoshoot Ideas:
When I am taking photos for my magazine, I want them to be unique and different. As electro is a unusual gerne of music, I will link this with my photo's. I will also make sure the clothing is the right style for the genre of my magazine.

School Magazine - Contents Page

This is my school contents page. The page numbers stand out because they are bold and are a different colour to the rest of the text on the page. The title 'contents' stands out because it is a different colour and this is is important, because the reader needs to know that it is clear it is the contents page.

Second draft for my school magazine

This is my second draft for my school magazine. I have improved this cover by changing the colour of the background, changed the colour of the subheadings, changed the font of the masthead and put the schools logo on the cover. The fact that the background colour is darker, it doesnt draw your attention away from the photo and it matches well with the black and white theme of the photo. The colours go well together, and the logo and the colour scheme of the text, compliment each other. The shot used is a medium shot, this mkaes it easy to identify his facial expression.

First draft of my school magazine

This is my first draft of the school magazine cover. I have made the imagage black and white and placed it on a bright yellow background however I think that the background draws your attention away from the photo. I think the blue text stands out on the background and this makes it easier to read. I asked people to analyse this front cover and the feedback I got was to make the background a different colour, to have the schools logo on the cover and also to change the font of the masthead.

Target audience

Considering the target audience for a magazine is important. Everything on the front cover and inside has to appeal to the target audience and catch their eye and this is so they take notice of it. My target audience will be females and males and too anybody who has an interest of electro music from the 80's and also modern electronic music.

progress on research

Today I have been researching magazines that I will be using for inspiration. The genre that I have been looking at is electro/retro music, and this is the genre of music I want to do for my music magazine. I have commented on magazine front covers and explained what I like about them and what i dislike. This has given me a good idea on what I can take forward in the future, and what will not work so well. I have took in to consideration the layout of the magazine covers, and what looks more eye catching. I have thought about what colours work well together and stand out.
